Kompeito is a type of Japanese sugar candy. It takes the form of a small sphere with a bumpy surface, and comes in a variety of colours and flavours. It is said that it was brought to Japan from Portugal in 16th century; the word Kompeitō comes from the Portuguese word Confeito . After Japanese-made Kompeito spread in early 18th century it got nationwide popularity and it continues to this day.
